Real Life in a Delhi Slum

There are more than 700 slums in Delhi and most reports estimate that somewhere between one third and one half of the 20 million people in Delhi live in slums. Sanjay Colony, the area of our tour, is a slum in South Delhi situated in the Okhla industrial area. The slum is a total of 25 acres and approximately 60,000 people live and work within its grounds.

Our tour offers you a unique understanding of how people live their lives in this low income area. It is the most grounded, and arguably the most challenging, of our tours, so we recommend it only for our most intrepid guests. It is eye opening to see the conditions these Delhiites live in, and you’ll come away from it with a new understanding of the way our world truly is. While on the tour, you’ll see how people work in the clothing industry, experience the home lives of the residents, have an opportunity to view the role of faith in people’s lives through a temple visit, learn more about the education system in both the slum and Delhi as a whole, and be exposed the day-to-day challenges of living in the slum.

We ask that you heed the following directions during your trip. We kindly ask that you refrain from taking photos and videos in the slum out of respect for the local people and their lives. Visitors to the slum should wear sensible footwear, such as sneakers or boots, avoiding any sandals or other open toed shoes. We also ask that you dress modestly in light-weight and cool clothing. While this tour may be challenging at points, it is an enriching experience that will show you a way of living unlike any you’ve ever seen before.
